Improper pruning can ruin your trees.
Why proper pruning cuts are important.

Improper pruning cuts, such as topping, flush cuts, or leaving long stubs, severely damage trees by destroying their natural defense mechanisms, leading to decay, disease entry, and structural failure. Topping, which cuts off the main top, is the most harmful, often leaving the tree vulnerable to pests and death. Proper techniques include cutting just outside the branch collar.
Common Harmful Pruning Practices
Flush Cuts: Cutting inside the branch collar (the swelling where the branch meets the stem) prevents the tree from sealing the wound, causing rot to enter the trunk.
Stub Cuts: Leaving too much of a branch (a "stub") allows the dead wood to decay backward into the tree's main structure.
Topping: Removing the top portion of the main leader to reduce height is highly detrimental, weakening the structure and leaving large, vulnerable wounds.
Lion-Tailing: Removing too many interior branches, which weakens the branch structure, causes bark sunburn, and reduces structural integrity.
Over-Pruning: Removing more than 25% of the canopy can stress the tree, causing stunted growth and encouraging disease susceptibility.
Consequences of Improper Cuts
Decay and Cavities: Improperly sealed wounds act as entry points for pathogens, leading to permanent decay.
Structural Weakness: Weakly attached sprouts and lack of proper compartmentalization make limbs prone to breaking.
Tree Death: In severe cases, the cumulative effect of poor cuts causes the tree to slowly decline and eventually die.
Tips for Proper Pruning
Use Proper Tools: Use sharp, clean tools to prevent tearing or spreading disease.
Identify the Branch Collar: Cut just outside the branch collar, not flush with the trunk, to allow for proper healing.
Timing: Prune during the dormant season (fall/winter) to reduce stress on the tree.
Consult Experts: If in doubt, hire a certified arborist to prevent permanent damage.
